Dasht-e Kavir or Kavir Desert, Central Iran

Dasht-e-Kavir which is widely known as Kavir-e Namak or the Great Salt Desert is a central desert lying in the middle of Iranian plateau.

Kavir Desert with the total surface of 77,600 KM2 (800KM by 320 KM) is the Earth’s 23rd largest desert.

Dahst-e-Kavir stretches from the basins of Alburz Mountains range in the North-West to the Dasht-e-Lut in the South-East and is partitioned between Iranian Provinces Khorasan, Semnan, Isfahan, Tehran and Yazd.

Like swirls of paint on an enormous canvas, shallow lakes, mudflats, and salt marshes share the sinuous valleys on Iran’s largely uninhabited Dasht-e Kavir or Great Salt Desert. Settlements are found only in the surrounding mountain ranges.

There are interesting stops in this desert which provide a chance to enjoy the silence of deserts to travelers. Garmeh, Maranjab, Tabas, Rig-Jen, Jandaq and … are from this list.

World Travel Iran (Behinburg Tour & Travel Company) is one of the fewest companies in Iran which operates the desert tours.

Lut Desert  or Kavir-e-Lut, Eastern & Southeastern Iran

Kavir-e-Lut is a Virgin place on Earth with an area of 54000km2 situated in the east and southeast of Iran. The very beautiful and typical phenomena abound in this desert is to be seen no animal and vegetable life of any kind is to be seen in a major parts of Kavir-e-Lut.

Lut desert has a few universally unique specifications, due to the rough environmental conditions and the limited facilities of life. Moreover, limited number of roads passing through, the problems and difficulties of urban development resulting not much civil industrial activities, then it is perfectly intact and virgin. Its natural and various phenomena have remained intact since far years and it is the only natural changes which lives their usual effect on Lut desert.

Geography of Iran consists of a plateau surrounded by mountains and divided into drainage basins. Kavir-e Lut, 480 kilometers long and 320 kilometers wide, is one of the largest of these desert basins and is considered to be one of the virgin places on Earth. Salt flats cover the low plateau of the eastern part of Lut Desert. In contrast, the center riddled with ravines and sinkholes has been sculpted by the wind into a series of parallel ridges and furrows, extending over 150 km and reaching 75 meters in height. The southeast is a vast expanse of sand, like a Saharan erg, with dunes 300 meters high, among the tallest in the world. One of the very unique specification of Dasht-e-Lut is its temperature to be called “Hottest land surface”. Studies and measurements of MODIS (Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) installed on NASA's satellite "Aqua" from 2003 to 2005 testify that the hottest land surface on Earth is located in Kavir-e Lut and land surface temperatures reach here 70.7 °C, though the air temperature is cooler. Gandom Beryan is the hottest part of Dasht-e-Lut, a large plateau covered in dark lava, approximately 480 square kilometers in area.  According to a local legend, the name (in translation from Persian - "Toasted wheat") originates from an accident where a load of wheat was left in the desert and was eventually scorched by the heat in a few days.

Kalut in Shahdad Desert (100 Kilometers from Kerman) is a must see area in Kavir-e-Lut. Gravellies (desert vases) near shahdad are sometimes 10 Meters long, while the longest gravelly of African deserts are 3 Meters long. In Shahdad Desert, there are 100 Hectares of salt marsh in the shape of boiling eggs that are unique in the world. Experience a real pleasant silence in Lut Desert, Shahdad, Iran.
